In my latest book, I argue that Donald Trump skillfully uses the established rules and historical precedents of American democracy for his own benefit, adding a brutal style and a showman’s flair to existing political trends. I caution against a “political collapsology,” suggesting that the American system has checks and balances and a resilience that prevent a president from being all-powerful, thus calling for a more measured analysis of his impact.
